Engagement & Opportunities Manager (Avery Hill)

The postholder will be responsible for delivering effective opportunities via student groups, events, and activity for engagement across the Avery Hill campus. A key part of the role is for all students to have high quality and inclusive opportunities to come together and connect within their communities and become their best at Greenwich.

Responsible for: Engagement and Opportunities Coordinator (Sports) & Student Staff

Department/Service

This role sits within the wider Membership Services department, together with other key areas consisting of; Advice and Wellbeing, Academic Communities, Representation and Democracy, we provide a high-quality service for students, that they can shape, steer and be at the heart.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

This postholder will be part of the Membership Management Team and will be expected to contribute to departments wider objectives and planning.

The post holder will:

  • Have expert knowledge in areas of in relation to membership services and policies relating to participation and barriers to participation in such activity
  • Support and develop strong student-led communities in areas of: sports (across each campus) Front of House (inc room bookings, ambassadors and GSU space) and one-off opportunities so that members can thrive.
  • Support a strong community sense of belonging across the Avery Hill campus in collaboration with University departments (Accommodation) with activity and interventions.
  • Contribute to the strategic objectives of GSU, with a particular focus on developing engagement, opportunities, and student experience with a diverse student body
  • Provide line management and day to day operational management to the Avery Hill Engagement & Opportunities team.
  • Gather data and insight from across the wider engagement team to be used to and measure impact against GSU strategy and aims, and prepare reports for the Head of Campus Engagement and Opportunities
  • Lead the planning and annual delivery of key activity such as GSU Welcome, Varsity & Activities Awards.
  • General oversight of the Avery Hill office in collaboration with central HR and front of house.
  • Building and maintaining robust systems for ensuring students’ safety when engaging in GSU activity such as Risk Assessments, Standard Operating Procedures, external speaker process, insurance, and any other necessary checks).
  • Ensure opportunities are effectively communicated to all students based at Greenwich.

Budget & Financial Management 

  • Manage a budget relating to Avery Hill campus engagement and sports clubs.
  • Being responsible for the team’s resources and ensuring these are effectively allocated, managed and controlled
  • Together with the Head of Campus Engagement and Opportunities and Finance team ensure suitable financial procedures are in place when dealing with student finances
  • Ensure robust processes, systems, polices and where appropriate standard procedures are in place to ensure a positive return on investment
  • Review and provide narrative for scrutiny at monthly management meetings with the Head of Campus Engagement and Opportunities and Finance Team

Monitoring and Evaluation 

  • Contribute to the development of a structured approach to gathering, analysing and reporting on data relating to engagement of students with our services at Greenwich campus
  • Ensure evaluation mechanisms are embedded in the teams working practises and that findings are shared and used to implement learnings with the goal of improving services
  • Support Officers by preparing information, statistics and trends about key services to be shared within the University committee cycle
  • Support the Officers with information for any campaigns relating to lobbying/advocacy for improved needs for students at Greenwich campus

Stakeholder Management 

  • Collaborate with GSU colleagues, particularly the Student Voice and Advice Teams to ensure we have a consistent approach to how we work with and support students
  • Work with students through our representative structures and forums to ensure we shape services students want and need, taking into consideration the varying campus priorities
  • Support students from all demographics, and particularly those from under-represented groups to develop and grow their won activities and communities
  • Attend internal and external meetings, forums and discussions on behalf of the Head of Campus Engagement or wider team
  • Prepare submissions for relevant awards and accreditations as necessary
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with relevant UoG staff and departments including Student Academic Services; Accommodation team, ILS,, Alumni, Facilities Management, Security, Sodexo, Partner Colleges and local providers such as Ravensbourne and Trinity Laban etc.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Experience

  • Line management experience
  • Relevant experience working in the youth, education, student union or other membership organisation
  • Experience of managing a multi-functional team
  • Experience of mentoring coaching staff/elected officers
  • Experience of developing operational policies and procedures
  • Experience of budget management, project management, and operational management
  • Experience of working with a range of stakeholders and partnership working or strategic networking
  • Experience of working in sports environment

Essential Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work with and lead a high performing team
  • Ability to troubleshoot difficult situations, and deal with them calmly, efficiently and effectively
  • Ability to produce confident, clear written reports and be able to write succinct documents on complex areas
  • IT skills at a level that supports membership CRM systems and other platform s
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills with the ability to manage others to reach deadlines, within agreed budgets and to a consistently high standard
  • Ability to write strategies and be able to effectively communicate vision and mission
  • Ability to stay focused and efficient in the face on changing priorities
  • Track record of successfully developing and implementing projects and operational change
  • Able to draft policies, SOPs and procedures with an eye for detail and accuracy

Essential Knowledge

  • Awareness of current issues within the higher education sector and barriers to participation
  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation
  • Knowledge of Safeguarding, external speaker processes, risk assessments and GDPR

Hours of work: Full time - 35 hours per week

Salary: £37,043 - £41,693 *
